We've Got an Update on Josh Allen's Foot from the Most Reliable Sources in America: Musical Theater People

It's obviously been a tough couple of weeks for the Bills Mafia, punctuated by a couple of excruciating days in which this was the last image they had of the man who gave them 300 yards through the air and 100 yards on the ground in the loss to Tampa Sunday:

Seeing Josh Allen in the kind of walking boot you normally expect to see after a skiing accident or a skydiving mishap, is the sort of anguish that no amount of drunken table dives can cure. With a season on the line, these poor, downtrodden souls need reassurance and they need it five minutes ago.

But when it comes to getting information on the man who is essentially your entire offense, and who's been expected to carry you to dominate your division - if not your conference and the entire league - sometimes relying on injury reports and football media figures simply will not do. For the real truth, there are moments when you've got to turn to the most trusted source in news.

"Hamilton" fans. And they've got a reason for Bills fans to hope:

How about those musical theater folk? Getting the job done.

The last thing I intend to do is stereotype anyone. But my own musically gifted Irish Rose does a lot of theater. I've hung out with her theater friends. And I think I can safely say without fear of contradiction that there is not a ton of overlap between musicals fans and pro football fans.

True story: A while back we were hanging out with her best theater girlfriend and that friend's husband, just drinking and conversing. And the husband (a very nice guy) said to me, unironically, "Wait. Who is Bill Belichick? Am I supposed to know that name?" He also allowed his wife and daughter to go on the Gronk Family Party Cruise, so you know he's not even vaguely aware of anything related to pro sports. The point being, while the Venn Diagram with one circle representing "THEATER PEOPLE" and the other labeled "NFL FANS" does have an intersecting subset, it's extremely narrow.

And yet someone at a performance of "Hamilton" was able to not only recognize Allen and his girlfriend, but to give the world a much needed update on the status of his foot. Which should have a huge impact on Sunday's game against Carolina, the Vegas line, and Fantasy lineups around the nation as the playoffs begin.

So thank the theater gods someone was in the room where it happened. There are a million things Josh Allen hasn't done, but he's not throwing away his shot. In Western New York, you can be a new man and Allen is young, scrappy and hungry. And when the Bills Mafia's kids tell the story of this season, they'll tell the story of last night.

Of course, if I'm them, I'd probably rather have my franchise quarterback home on a Tuesday night with his foot up watching breakdowns of the Panthers coverage schemes and pass rush tendencies, but that's just me. "Hamilton" is a tough ticket to get, so I suppose he has to go when he can.
